Tongue Diagnosis

What is traditional tongue Diagnosis?

Along with pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis is considered is considered to be the most reliable and useful method of examination in traditional acupuncture.  The tongue is assessed for colour, texture, moisture, size and shape. A healthy tongue should appear not to large for the mouth, pink, moist with a little white coating.

Where as the pulses reflects the short term dysfunctions of the body, the tongue generally reflects more chronic dysfunctions. The body of the tongue is said to reflect pathology of the viscera, where as the coating generally more of digestion, fluid balance or heat regulation.

In a little more detail, when assessing the tongue, certain areas relate more to the specific viscera. This can be seen more clearly in the diagram.

What might the tongue look like in an acute condition?

In a acute fever the tongue may show signs of heat, indicated with a reddish colour often appearing in the Heart or Liver/Gall Bladder areas. The coating may also show signs of heat with a yellowish coating appearting.
