Acupuncture and Carpal Tunnel
Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a condition where the median nerve in the wrist becomes impinged. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers (Excluding the little finger), as well as carrying impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move. Therefore when this nerve becomes aggravated symptoms of pain, tingling, or numbness in the wrists, hands or fingers may occur. This may cause difficulty in the holding or gripping of objects. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by local inflammation of tendons and the surrounding area but is also often in the later stages of pregnancy and as a complication of thyroid disorders.
The acupuncture meridians commonly associated with the median nerve include the Colon, Lung, and Pericardium pathways. Through the activation of these pathways either by acupuncture, electro-acupuncture or cupping, the flow of qi and blood can be invigorated relieving pain, reducing inflammation and promoting the bodies own healing ability.
Often succeeding where other therapies cannot, acupuncture is very effective in the treatment of this condition. A course of 4 to 6 treatments can often see the problem resolved. Carpal Tunnel syndrome is one of the conditions, which the World Health Organization states can be effectively treated with acupuncture.
